Students of the Month

Galion, OH – The Galion City Schools Board of Education held its regular monthly meeting on March 5, 2025, to discuss key district updates and review ongoing initiatives.

The following staff and students were recognized for their outstanding demonstration of the Portrait of a Tiger trait of “balance”. Congratulations to Paislee Alberty-grade 2, Jayse Wolfe -grade 4, Lauriana Shumway-grade 8, and Alandria Thomas-grade 10.

There were two new additions to the Board Bylaws and Policies. The first is the Procurement and Use of Naloxone (Narcan) in Emergency Situations. Narcan will be located in each of the district’s buildings in a secure, but accessible location. Several select staff members will receive training in Narcan administration.

The second new policy is the welcomed addition of the School Facility Dogs Program. Galion City Schools supports the use of school facility dogs for the benefit of its students, subject to the conditions of the policy. School facility dogs are not the same as “emotional support animals” or “service animals.”

Animal Assisted Therapy is a goal-driven intervention that is directed and/or delivered by a health, human, or education service professional and is meant to improve the physical, social, emotional, and/or cognitive function of an individual. Benefits from working with a school facility dog include reduced stress, improved physical and emotional well-being, lower blood pressure, decreased anxiety, improved self-esteem, and normalization of the environment, increasing the likelihood of successful academic achievement by the student.

The following information will be kept current and submitted to the Board of Education:

  • The proof of registration as a school facility dog handler with the individual school facility dog to be used.

  • Proof from a licensed veterinarian that the school facility dog is in good health and has been immunized against diseases common to dogs. Such vaccinations shall be kept current and up to date at all times.

  • Proof of licensure from the local dog licensing authority.

The next Board of Education meeting is scheduled for April 15, at 6:30 pm in the Middle School.
